The Real Trackwives of Falls Creek

I’m very excited to show off these four very special “trackwives” on heidandseek.com today. After just coming off a tough training camp at Falls Creek, Victoria, I felt compelled to feature the women that made my trip the best that it could be.

These Melbourne Track Club athletes are world class (in more ways than one). They are Olympians, World Champs representatives and national champions. They are also quite ‘loved up’, and not just with their sport. All four have long term partners who encourage, challenge, and inspire them.

I chose to release this fitness post on Valentines Day not just to showcase romantic love stories, but also because these four women represent what I personally love most about this sport:

Dedicated. Determined. Kind. Tough. Talented. Silly. Sassy. Inspiring.

I feel very lucky when I meet other female athletes who build each other up and push their limits together as a team.

So here’s to fitness, girl power, and love. Happy Valentines Kittens.

How did you fall in love with running?
I have been running since I was 5 years old. I have loved all sports and I would say that I have always loved running. The more years I have run for, the more I love it. Running has really become a part of who I am. I am happiest and most relaxed when I run, and to miss a day of running makes my day feel incomplete. I am so fortunate that running has taken me around the world, and that I am able to do it full time at the moment. A passion and a career that I love.

What is your partners name? How did you fall in love with them?
My partner is Cameron French. We met 6 1/2 years ago. He is also an athlete, he competes in the 400m hurdles. It was a more of love at first sight type of thing. Both not really interested in a proper relationship, but also over time couldn’t be without each other. A gradual process – that has lead to a long term relationship, we live together, share similar goals and dreams and are working together to achieve the outcome.

How does your running and your relationship go hand in hand?
It is so amazing that my partner understands my goals and my passion. He understands the importance of training camps, being away for competition, and the amount of hours each day that are required for training and recovery. I love that he does a different discipline as it compliments me and the fact that I am a distance runner. I really love the difference between the distance runner and the sprinter mentality. Generally speaking sprinters are more relaxed and distance runners are more high strung. I would say that we have both helped each other and balanced each other out. I have definitely become more relaxed since meeting him. We really work well together.

How did you fall in love with running?
I started taking running more seriously in high school after I realized my short soccer career had come to and end, but I didn’t start loving running until I was part of a university team. At the University of Guelph, running became more than an individual pursuit and I loved training with a group of talented, gritty and tough women. At the time, Guelph had won 7 consecutive national cross country titles and I loved working along side my teammates to keep the streak alive. Training with other highly motivated women that push me to be a better athlete is still what I love about this sport most.

What is your partners name? How did you fall in love with them?
My partner’s name is Jamie Whitfield. I first met Jamie at a Canadian National cross country afterparty nine years ago. He’s witty, playful and we had great back and forth banter, all things I appreciate. I’m notoriously picky, but that night I just knew that we would be together. We ended up dating shortly after and our relationship came easily. We were similar but could still introduce each other to new things. We were romantic but not cliche. And we challenged each other while still being supportive.

How does your running and your relationship go hand in hand?
Jamie is my biggest fan and a constant source of encouragement. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Jamie. As a former runner, he gets the sport. He keeps me level headed in this sometimes emotionally and mentally trying sport. There are times when Jamie believes in me more than I believe in myself. He is also an exercise physiologist and helps me with monitoring body composition, supplements and my vaguely scientific questions about cherry juice.

What is your partners name? How did you fall in love with them?
Ryan Gregson. Running – i had speed goggles and he was the fastest thing going around back in high school.

How does your running and your relationship go hand in hand?
Ryan has made me more professional. I get to travel around the world with him, train with him, race with him, and thrive in a sport that is normally so brutal and lonely. To have a partner do what I do and understand every step of the ride is very comforting.

How did you fall in love with running?
At school – my friends signed me up for the school cross country and I loved it. I was instantly hooked. I had never run before then.

What is your partners name? How did you fall in love with them?
Adam Clarke. We met at university. It was love at first sight ;).

How does your running and your relationship go hand in hand?
We both train at a high level. Even though we do different events we can do some of our easy runs together. It’s good that we both understand what it takes to be a good athlete and compete at a high level. We spend at least 4 months of the year apart but we both know the sacrifices that it takes. Adam helps me with training a lot of the time too.
